No matter how much you put in to clean it, is the water in your pool turning cloudy? When the pump is running do you pick up on odd sounds? You may have an inkling something is amiss but not know if it is a minor thing or more serious.
We at Yummy Pools are here to help the pool owners of Metro Atlanta put an end to pump trouble and stave off the cost of a replacement. Operating out of near Cumming, GA, we will have a professional look at your equipment; give us a ring at (470) 703-6894. In the meantime, there are some warning signs one should be aware of.
Think of the pump as the heart of the system. It is what circulates everything so your chemicals can work their magic by drawing in and filtering the water. Once that pump begins to go, the issues are quick to manifest. The earlier they are put right, the better for your pocketbook.
Loud or Unusual Noises
You would expect a good pump to have a steady hum of sorts. New sounds warrant your attention. Grinding or screeching is typically indicative of a mechanical nature.
Tell tale noises include:
- Squealing from bearings that are worn
- A grinding motor
- Rattling of a part inside the pump or debris
- One that hums but will not start, which is a capacitor issue
- Vibrations you can put your hand on the housing and feel
Do not think these will pass if you put them off. They will only worsen and you could be left with a motor that has burned out.
Weak Water Flow or Loss of Suction
When the pump does not move water like it once did, the whole pool is affected. You will have a filter that is ineffective and poor circulation of your chemicals.
Some things to watch for:
- Return lines putting out air bubbles
- Little water being pushed by the return jets
- The gauge on your filter indicating low pressure
- Debris on the bottom of the pool that should have been cleared
- An empty pump basket
It could be a clogged basket or an air leak of some kind. Or a cracked housing and an impeller in need of a pro.
Water Leaking from the Pump
There is no good in having a puddle on your equipment pad. Not only do leaks squander your water and chemicals, they can see to it that the motor is damaged.
The usual culprits are:
- O-rings and gaskets past their prime
- A shaft seal on the way out
- Plumbing that is loose
- A crack in the housing
An early fix is inexpensive. Left to its own devices, a small leak will put a dent in the life of the pump.
Frequent Shut Offs
If the pump is cycling on and off of its own accord, it is trying to tell you something. Most often this is due to the electrical side of things or an overheating motor.
What you are likely to find is:
- A motor that is old or not getting enough air
- A capacitor giving out
- A wiring problem
- A clog making the motor labour
Make sure to get on top of this, an overheating motor is a safety issue as much as it is a repair job.
Your Energy Bill Goes Up
The pump is among the most energy intensive appliances in the home. As it wears, it has to put in more effort for the same result and you will see it in your electric bill. A spike in costs where there has been no change in your habits is a sign the motor is struggling.
The Case for Prompt Repairs
For the most part you will save money by being on top of a problem. A bad capacitor is an easy enough matter to put right; a motor that has given out is a different story altogether. Then again, the warning signs usually afford you time to do something about it.
Yummy Pools has a full in-house department for such repairs and we are fully licensed and insured. Our technicians are all vetted employees who have had background checks run on them. We put our Done Right Guarantee behind what we do and can provide financing on bigger jobs.
